Being Gay is truly Gay in Norway
Whether it’s education, healthcare or peacemaking, Norway does many things well. Buoyed by its discovery of offshore oil and gas deposits in the 1960s, Europe’s northernmost country enjoys one of the highest standards of living in the world.
Norway is also a role model when it comes to LGBT rights. Same-sex sexual activity has been legal since 1972 and Norway was the first country in the world to enact an anti-discrimination law for homosexuals in certain areas. Same sex couples are free to marry and adopt, and since 2009 lesbian couples have been permitted to receive IVF/assisted insemination.
It is no surprise then that Christopher Thy Thy, a gay Norwegian man originally from Vietnam, is so spirited in the following video. Although coming out in his early 20s was fraught with challenges, Christopher has settled into a peaceful life as a hair stylist in the western town of Bergen.
